| Fighting
for Consumers' Rights |
|
Since 1962, the Consumer
Federation of California has been committed to consumer advocacy and education.
CFC campaigns for state and federal laws that place consumer protection
ahead of corporate profit. Each year, CFC testifies before the California
legislature on dozens of bills that affect millions of our state's consumers.
CFC also appears before state agencies in support of consumer regulations.
Recent CFC legislative issues include: protecting consumer financial privacy,
reforming accounting industry practices, enabling patients to sue HMO's
for denial of care, holding homebuilders accountable for construction
defects, prohibiting manufacturers from keeping secret vital safety information
about defective products, and increasing temporarily the income tax on
the top two percent of California income earners in order to limit the
cuts to vital health and social services.
A Progressive Alliance
The Consumer Federation of California is a non-profit federation of several
dozen organizations, as well as individual members. Our members include
labor organizations, consumer groups, senior citizen organizations and
community groups. CFC takes a broad view of consumer issues, considering
the impact of public policy on the quality and cost of goods and services
as well as effects on working Californians, our families and our communities.

Consumer
Education and Research
The Consumer Federation of California has received consumer education
grants in several areas, including: telecommunications consumer rights,
energy efficiency awareness, firearms safety regulation, furniture marketing
practices, and scoring state lawmakers' voting records on consumer issues.
Our
Members Run the CFC
Every two years, CFC members choose delegates to a governing convention,
which adopts policies and elects Officers and a Policy Board. Between
conventions, the Policy Board, under the leadership of our President,
governs the CFC. Day to day operation is under the direction of an Executive
Director, appointed by the Policy Board.
CFC
Education Fund
CFC sponsors the Consumer Federation of California Education Fund, which
is a tax-exempt educational organization under Section 501(C)(3) of the
IRS Code. An autonomous Board of Directors governs the CFC Education Fund.
